Red letter day

Parker came home from school this week spelling the word 'red'. I guess they were talking about colors at school? Since she could sound it out and spell it, I asked her to try to write it, and she did. This counts as her first official word to write I guess.



We're sitting around waiting on hurricane Ike today. Luckily it has taken a more easterly turn during the night, and we'll just get a bit of rain and some wind. We're hoping our friends and relatives to the south get through it w/out much damage or trouble.

Artwork

I've been collecting pictures of Parker's artwork lately. She's gotten very creative. Of course she still loves to color in normal coloring books, but she's also branching out.
In her High Five magazine (preschooler version of Highlights) there was an cutout that you could fold into a book. Inspired by that, she had Bob make her a blank one, and she colored in the pages.

Without crawling up in the attic to get my books on stages of children's art, I'll say that starting to add sky and grass is a new stage of drawing, as is arms (neck is next I think ). Not sure if someone has told her to do that, or she's seen someone else do it, but either way, I think it 'counts'.

This weekend, a couple of the little blow in postcard thingies fell out of my magazine. Parker picked them up and immediately asked for a sheet of paper. She started folding and taping and gluing and adding stamps to make this collage.

Then, she went through other magazines and got more, and made another one to match.

Sewing

Here's a quick picture of Parker and her sewing project. At Hobby Lobby I bought a little plastic mesh thing in the shape of a star, and some yarn for her to 'sew'. I guess you're supposed to do needlepoint on it but she's just sort of doing it as you would those lacing cards (we skipped those), going around the edge of one area of the star....then switching colors (her design). I'm going to have lots of ends to weave in later if she ever finishes it. She can't quite do it on her own, it sort of takes 3 hands to keep her on track, but she's enjoying it, and proud of her work. Plus, it burns up about 15 minutes of the afternoon before her attention span is spent and she's on to something else.
